12 - Individualism in Finland (Hofstede)

A HOFSTEDE DIMENSION

The fundamental question addressed by this dimension is the degree of interdependence that a society maintains among its members. The question is whether people's self-image is defined in terms of "I" or "We". In individualistic societies, people are expected to care only for themselves and their immediate family. In collectivist societies, people belong to "groups" that take care of them in exchange for their loyalty.

RESULTS

According to G. Hostede, a criterion determines the relationships that individuals in the same community have with each other. Communitarian societies favour time spent in groups, whereas individualistic societies favour time spent by individuals for their personal lives. G. Hostede established a link between economic development and individualism, the most economically developed states having a strong relationship to individualism. The results of Hostede's study are as follows: Finland 63, France 71, Estonia 60. This result indicates that France has a significantly higher ratio to individualism than either Finland or Estonia. Finland's GDP per capita is 40,346, France's is 40,537 and Estonia's is 26,998. It can be seen here that the economic situation is not the only criterion at stake as France and Finland have comparable economic situations in terms of GDP per capita and yet the gap is very clear with very individualistic France and moderately individualistic Finland with a score of 63. In comparison, the USA gets the highest score and Guatemala the lowest.

INDIVIDUALISTIC SOCIETY

Finland is an individualistic society. This means that there is a strong preference for a loosely structured social framework in which individuals are expected to take care of themselves and their immediate family only. In this individualistic society, crime leads to guilt and loss of self-esteem, the employer/employee relationship is a contract based on mutual benefit, and hiring and promotion decisions are supposed to be based on merit alone.
