15 - Sauna in Finland

WHAT ABOUT SAUNA ?

As soon as I arrived in Finland, I began to hear the praises of the sauna: the Finns all assured me that this was absolutely the best possible health care.
The Finnish sauna, in Finnish "Suomalainen sauna", is a very important part of Finnish culture. It is a place that is usually heated to about 80-110° C for sweating, relaxing and washing. It is based on steam produced by throwing water on hot stones. It is estimated that up to 99% of Finns regularly use the sauna. Its origins are thought to date back to the Bronze Age, between 1500 and 900 BC. Finland has five million inhabitants and more than three million saunas, an average of one per household. Indeed, a law in Finland states that every dwelling must have a sauna that it can use on a regular basis. For Finns, the sauna is a place for friends and family to relax, as well as a place for physical and mental relaxation. Finns consider saunas not as a luxury, but as a necessity. Before the advent of public health care and nurseries, until the nineteenth century, almost all Finnish mothers gave birth in saunas.

HOW THEY USED TO DO IT ?

They used to go there almost every week and they going necked. But don't worry there is also public sauna were you have to have a swim suit.
Finland is a country with thousands of lakes and millions of saunas, so it is only natural to combine the two. To get the most out of a Finnish sauna, it is advisable to cool off in the natural waters regardless of the weather conditions.
You have to go first in the cold water and next in the sauna.

WHERE YOU CAN DO IT ?

You can dot it to the student village, there is sauna that you can book, and you have four free entrance by month.
Or if you want to have a real experience you should go to "Villa Järvelä Oy". It's near Turku and you just next to a lake and the setting is beautiful. I did it and as advised, I alternated periods spent in the overheated oven with a refreshing swim in the lake. After this ritual, I felt wonderfully well, both rested and invigorated. You should try also !
But if it's too much for you it's ok there is also jacuzzi and you can relax there.
