6 - Geography of Finland

SUPERFICIE

 Finland has a surface area of 338,000 km2, with 10% lake and 66% forest. It is the seventh largest country in Europe, with ⅓. The countries bordering Finland are Russia, Norway and Sweden. And it is bordered by the Baltic Sea, or more precisely by the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland.


POPULATION

 Finland has a population of about 5.52 million and is one of the European countries with the lowest density: 16 inhabitants/km2. Its capital is Helsinki with about 642,000 inhabitants. The Finnish territory also includes an autonomous archipelago and part of the Åland Islands, the other part belonging to Sweden.

 CLIMATE

 As far as Finnish climate is concerned, temperatures in Helsinki do not exceed 17°C in summer and do not fall below -5°C in winter. Temperatures in northern Finland are much colder in the Article Circle. In winter it is the polar night, when the sun does not rise, and in summer it is the midnight sun.

WHAT ABOUT SAUNA ? As soon as I arrived in Finland, I began to hear the praises of the sauna: the Finns all assured me that this was absolutely the best possible health care.  The Finnish sauna, in Finnish "Suomalainen sauna", is a very important part of Finnish culture. It is a place that is usually heated to about 80-110° C for sweating, relaxing and washing. It is based on steam produced by throwing water on hot stones. It is estimated that up to 99% of Finns regularly use the sauna. Its origins are thought to date back to the Bronze Age, between 1500 and 900 BC. Finland has five million inhabitants and more than three million saunas, an average of one per household. Indeed, a law in Finland states that every dwelling must have a sauna that it can use on a regular basis. For Finns, the sauna is a place for friends and family to relax, as well as a place for physical and mental relaxation. Finns consider saunas not as a luxury, but as a necessity. 24 - Rauma

ABOUT THE CITY  With 40,000 inhabitants, Rauma is one of the most unique and pleasant cities in Finland. This former harbour and lace-making town with its old wooden quarter is one of the best preserved in the country. It is one of the best preserved in the country and is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. Miraculously untouched by fires, almost 600 wooden houses display their delightful pastel-coloured facades in a maze of paved lanes covering almost 30 hectares. In 1991, this site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1442 on the outskirts of an ancient port, Rauma developed around a 15th century Franciscan monastery. Thanks to the export of wood, the town chartered its own sailing ships for a long time. In 1550, however, its inhabitants were forced to move to Helsinki to populate the new city that the Swedish king, Gustav I Vasa, decided to found. This forced exodus weakened the municipality.
