36 - Wildlife in forests and boreal regions

There are some animals that we find in Finland and that we are not used to see in France, I have listed some of them during my stay.

PREDATORS SUCH AS LYNXES, eagles and gluttons still live in the heart of the country's immense eastern forests near the Russian border.

THE BROWN BEAR, once feared so much that it was taboo to pronounce its name (karhu), remains the most impressive. Having regained its habitat since the desertification of the huge fir forests of Russian Karelia, which was annexed at the end of the Second World War, it is no longer threatened with extinction. Its flesh has even become a delicacy in some Russian restaurants in Helsinki.

WOLVES, on the other hand, have almost disappeared. In Eastern Finland, the age-old hatred and fear of wolves is such that once a wolf is spotted, it is immediately hunted down.

THE SEAL living in Lake Saimaa, whose species is practically extinct, is legally protected.

THE REINDEER must face several predators such as the glutton, a formidable enemy. The reindeer's diet consists of a variety of plants in summer and lichens in winter, which are cleared from the snow with their very useful hooves. The large number of reindeer does not require any special protective measures. In this area, man is still the most dangerous predator. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 1986 will lead to the slaughter of thousands of animals in the country, seriously damaging the food chain. In Lapland, reindeer herds, during their annual migrations, gather on the tunturis, the mysterious heights that loom as far as the eye can see.

LAPLAND'S WATERS ARE ALSO INHABITED BY A WIDE RANDE OF WILDLIFE. It is known as one of the largest salmon fishing grounds in the world, and within its river system there are also trout, burbot and perch.

ORNITHOLOGISTS, will not be outdone. Many varieties of birds (wild ducks, falcons, etc.) can be seen in the Lappish sky.

POLAR FOXES are also quite common, as is the beaver. In a smaller category, see also the hedgehog, muskrat, marten, otter and hare. The only venomous snake in Finland is the viper (kyy) whose antidote (kyypakkaus) can be found in pharmacies.
